Jim Johnson

Jim Johnson is founder and president of Heartland Family Mediators, LLC. His listening skills, sensitivity, and style combine with a meditation method that has proven effective in helping couples achieve family peace before, during and following divorce. Jim’s 45-plus years of experience in the financial services field give added value to clients seeking equitable division of assets. This experience is particularly valuable in the divorce mediation setting as couples work through the challenging economic issues in divorce.

In a process he refers to as “divorce economic planning,” Jim employs a comprehensive economic planning method that helps clients clarify their mutual objectives. This clarification adds momentum to the process and results in an action plan that uses strategies focused on achieving economic independence for both parties.

When Jim began working in the divorce financial planning arena, he helped couples work out issues related to property settlements, maintenance and child support. His focus on the interests of children led to helping couples resolve issues using a mediation model. Jim has employed this model with clients since 2007. In 2011, he completed the requirements necessary for approval as a mediator by the Indiana Supreme Court. Jim is skilled and comfortable mediating issues for clients who are represented by attorneys. Primarily Jim uses mediation to assist couples who have decided to complete their divorces without attorneys.

An Indiana University graduate, Jim has earned Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), Chartered Financial Consultant, (ChFC), Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA) and Certified Financial Planner ™ (CFP®) designations. He is a member of the National and Indiana Associations of Insurance and Financial Advisors, the Academy of Financial Divorce Practitioners, the Institute of Divorce Financial Analysts, the Association of Divorce Financial Planners, the Financial Planning Association, the Society of Financial Services Professionals and the Indiana Association of Mediators.
